Royal Challengers Bangalore held their nerves to win their opening game of the WPL 2024 by 2 runs. Leg-spinner Sobhana Asha was the difference maker with her five-wicket haul on Saturday.

The 32-year-old did well to dent the UP batting just when it seemed like RCB were set to lose. This was also the first time any Indian bowler has picked 5-wickets in the Women’s Premier League.

Smriti Mandhana and the rest of the side were seen hugging the veteran uncapped India player. Even Yuzvendra Chahal was happy for the RCB bowler as she turned the game on its head with the ball.

Sobhana Asha- RCB’s trump card

Women’s Premier League 2024 has already seen history made thanks to Sobhana Asha. The veteran spinner became the first ever Indian bowler to be picked fifer in WPL. On Saturday when the chips were the Kerala-based bowler showed her class.

Sobhana Asha belongs to Kerala and was born in Thiruvananthapuram on the 16th of March 1991. She plays for Railways and made her Indian domestic debut nearly a decade ago. In the local circles, she is known for her excellent control of the ball.

When she found herself down on confidence, Sobhana Asha decided to seek help. The help was provided by former India star Laxman Sivaramakrishnan. All Sivaramakrishnan did was work on her release and her use of the crease.

This changed Sobhana Asha as a bowler and she had the best batters in trouble. It was seen yesterday when she dismissed Grace Harris at a crucial point of the game. According to the bowler herself she had worked on the dismissal during the game. Speaking at the end of the game, Asha revealed that she was prepared to get hit by Harris.

That confidence saw her claim five wickets and help RCB win the game by 2 runs. After a dismal 2023 season, Smriti Mandhana will be happy to have found a new star. If the Bangalore-based outfit has to win the WPL season they need Asha to step up.

Team India last year found Saika Ishaque, and this year it is Sobhana Asha. Kerala has already produced a WPL star in Sajana Sajeevan. We can safely say that Sobhana has been added to the list.
