It was a great start for South Africa as they secured a 102-run win against Sri Lanka in their opening game of the ODI World Cup 2023 on October 7 at Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium in Delhi. Notably, their side scored the highest total in the history of ODI World Cups, shattering the record held by Australia in the 2015 ODI World Cup.

Speaking about the match, it was Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka who won the toss and invited the South African side to bat first. After being sent to bat first, Quinton de Kock played a stellar knock, while skipper Temba Bavuma could only pile up eight runs. Notably, South African star batters Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram, and Rassie van der Dussen hammered a magnificent hundred to light up the show.

The left-handed batsman Quinton de Kock hammered 100 runs from 84 balls, including 12 boundaries and three sixes, with a solid strike rate of 120. In addition, Rassie van der Dussen struck out 108 runs from 110 balls, featuring 13 boundaries and two sixes. Following their dismissal, star cricketer and SRH batter Aiden Markram also struck out his great century.

Sri Lanka had a poor start, which made them lose the opening game of the ODI World Cup 2023

The great all-rounder hammered 106 runs from just 54 balls, featuring 14 boundaries and three sixes, with a solid strike rate of 197 that guided his side to post the challenging total of 428 runs in just 50 overs of play. Notably, the three centuries helped them post the highest total in the ODI World Cup.

Later, while chasing, the Dasun Shanaka-led side had a terrible start as their great openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Perera departed for just 0 and 7 runs, respectively. Following that, wicketkeeper-batsman Kusal Mendis hammered 78 runs from 42 balls, and star all-rounder Charith Asalanka piled up 79 runs but couldn’t cross the finishing line. Later, towards the end, star bowler Kasun Rajitha tried very hard but his team eventually lost the opening game of the ODI World Cup 2023.
