‘Star se uthake sadak par launga’ – Twitter amazed as Kane Williamson sold to Gujarat at base price in Indian T20 League player auction
Kane Williamson was the first player to go under the hammer in the ongoing Indian T20 League player auction 2023. He was released by Hyderabad last month when the team revealed their list of retained and released players. The right-hander was part of the team since the 2015 season. Not to forget, the Kiwi was part of the Orange Army’s title campaign in 2016.
Also, he led the team when David Warner wasn’t picked by Hyderabad for the 2018 season due to Sandpaper gate. In that season, the team played the final, only to lose to eventual champions, Chennai. Over the years, the New Zealand white-ball skipper has played 76 games for the team which also happens to be his whole Indian T20 League career.
In the cash-rich league, the 32-year-old has amassed 2101 runs at an average of 36.22 including 18 fifties. Notably, the former New Zealand U19 player had a poor season with 216 runs in 13 games at an average of 19.64 including one fifty. Not to forget, he was dealing with elbow injuries too. These are one of the reasons why the 2016 winners decided to release from the team.
Now, in the ongoing Indian T20 League player auction 2023, he was the first player to go under the hammer. Notably, only the 2022 winners Gujarat showed any interest to sign him. The former Kiwi Test captain’s base price of Two crores INR. The Indian T20 League holders put in the one and only bid and manage to sign Williamson for the next year.
Notably, last month, the team skipper Hardik Pandya gave an indication that the team might buy Kane for the next season. Now, the Ahmedabad-based team has bought the latter for two crores. Last year, he was retained by Hyderabad for around 15-16 crores.
