Fast bowler, Ollie Robinson ruffled the feathers of several former Australian cricketers when he went into Usman Khawaja and dropped the ‘F-bomb on him twice during the first Ashes Test between England and Australia at Edgbaston. Robinson launched a foul-mouthed attack against Khawaja after dismissing him in the first innings, and he had another word or two with Australia’s opener in the second innings.

After stunning England in the first Ashes 2023 Test, Australian cricket legend Matthew Hayden believes Australia can learn a lot from England. The Robinson-Khawaja incident irritated a number of Australian ex-cricketers, including Ricky Ponting and Matthew Hayden. Hayden’s time came after Ponting chastised Robinson for his statements against him. During a chat with former wicketkeeper Ian Healy, Hayden referred to Robinson as a ‘forgettable player’ and slapped him with a nasty burn.

He’s a forgettable cricketer: Mathew Hayden

“That’s how you combat England as well. As soon as Pat Cummins started coming at Joe Root and hit a couple of sixes,” Hayden said. “Then the other bloke; he’s a forgettable cricketer. A fast bowler that is bowling 124 (kph) nude nuts and he’s got a mouth from the south.” When Healy asked, “Who, Ollie Robinson?”, Hayden replied, “Someone like him, you can just go, ‘Brother, I’m coming at ya.’

Robinson’s actions infuriated more than just Hayden and Ponting. The renowned Allan Border and Healy himself were not thrilled by the England pacer’s pranks, which is odd given how Australians have never shied away from ‘expressing’ themselves on the field.

Robinson responded angrily, saying he doesn’t care about the reaction to his sledge and that such things are unavoidable in a high-profile series like The Ashes. He said, “It’s my first home Ashes and to get the big wicket at the time was special for me. I think Uzzie played unbelievably well. To get that wicket for us as a team at the time was massive. We all want that theatre of the game, don’t we? So I’m here to provide it.” “I don’t really care how it’s perceived, to be honest. It’s the Ashes. It’s a professional sport. If you can’t handle that, what can you handle?”
