In the first Test between South Africa and India, both teams were expected to give each other a great fight. After all, it is a two-match Test series in the Rainbow Nation between both teams for the first time after the 2013 series. Meanwhile, in this game, it looked like both teams were polls apart from each other. After winning the toss, the Proteas decided to bowl first.

Batting first, the two-time World Test Championship finalists had a poor start as they lost three wickets for 24 runs. The top three batters such as Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Shubman Gill lost their wickets in this phase. At this point, the likes of former captain Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer put together 68 runs for the fourth wicket.

When the team looked like recovering from the early blows, both batters got out and the team was reduced to 107/5. With the wicket of Ravichandran Ashwin, the team was reduced further to 121/6. Thanks to Shardul Thakur (24) and KL Rahul‘s hundred, the team reached 245 all-out. After this, the team was expected to do well with the ball to remain in the game.

However, after losing Aiden Markram early, the team managed a few partnerships to keep themselves ahead in the game. Thanks to Dean Elgar (185), Tony de Zorzi (28), David Bedingham (56), and Marco Jansen (84), the team reached 408 all-out with skipper Temba Bavuma not batting. After the first inning, South Africa led by 163 runs.

South Africa win by an innings to take a lead of 1-0

After the first innings, it was certain that India needed to do extremely well to make South Africa bat again and beat them. However, with the bat, the visitors displayed the worst batting display in their first innings. After losing their openers on 13, Gill and Kohli were doing well. However, the former lost his wicket after making 26 runs. After this, no other batter apart from Kohli (76) managed to get past the double-digit mark. With this, the team lost by an innings and 32 runs.
