‘This is what football is all about’ – Twitter in absolute disarray as Saudi Arabia humbles Argentina
On the third day of the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2022, Argentina and Saudi Arabia faced each in the first game of the day. The Southern American side is ranked third in FIFA rankings while the Asian side ranks 51st. It was supposed to be a cakewalk for the team. However, it is always said that a sport is always uncertain.
In the recently-concluded game, the two-time winners (Argentina) started well as their superstar, Lionel Messi opened the scoring in only the 10th minute of the game. They might have scored much more in the first half if not for seven offsides. After the first half, the former champions were leading by 1-0. On the other hand, the Green Brigade and the former champions had their fair share of fouls in the first half.
Saudi Arabia scored two goals to create history
The world number 51 side made a miraculous comeback in the second half. In the first eight minutes, they scored two goals to have an upper hand for the first time. Saleh Al Shehri scored in the 48th minute while Salem Al Dawsari scored in the 53rd minute. After this, it was a series of fouls, yellow cards, and missed opportunities till the end of the game.
Just like in the first half, Argentina failed to score as their quite a few offsides. In the 11th minute of the injury time, Argentina had an opportunity to score and level the game. However, that wasn’t meant to be as the attempt was saved by the Saudi goalie. Three minutes later, the final whistle was taken which meant that history was now made. The former champions were humbled by Saudi Arabia by 1-2.

That's just sensational from Saudi Arabia. That defensive performance in the final half hour was unreal. Incredible atmosphere. First time a game at this tournament has felt and sounded like a World Cup. Brilliant.

Argentina's 36 game unbeaten run has come to an end. What an incredible result for Saudi Arabia. Today desire, hard work and relentless effort trumped talent.

Argentina, the bookmakers favorite to win the World Cup, have lost to the weakest team they could ever face in the tournament.
