Hyderabad faced off against Kolkata in the 25th match of the Indian T20 League 2022 at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. The Brabourne Stadium has thus far provided some sporting wickets with something for everybody. The 25th match of the tournament was no exception.

Hyderabad won the toss and Kane Williamson decided to field first. Kolkata decided to bench Ajinkya Rahane owing to his lack of form and decided to play Aaron Finch for the match. The new opening pair of Finch and Venkatesh Iyer, however, did not last long. The first wicket of Kolkata fell in the second over of the innings for a score of just 11 runs. After this Kolkata kept losing wickets frequently and were 3 down inside the powerplays. The skipper of the team Shreyas Iyer and Nitish Rana stabilized Kolkata’s innings with a partnership of 39 runs. But Shreyas Iyer did not last long and was dismissed for 28 runs off 25 deliveries by Umran Malik. Nitish Rana however, continued with his steady progress and completed his half-century. He was dismissed for a personal score of 54 runs off 36 deliveries by T. Natarajan in the 18th over of the innings. Andre Russell came out to bat at number seven for Kolkata and did what he does best. He thrashed the Hyderabad bowling scoring 49 runs off 25 balls, hitting 4 fours and 4 sixes during his stay. On the back of Russell’s power hitting at the death, Kolkata was able to post a total of 175 runs on the board in their 20 overs. T. Natarajan was the best bowler for Hyderabad as he picked up 3 wickets for 37 runs in his 4 overs.

Hyderabad started their chase losing a wicket in the form of Abhishek Sharma (3 of 10) in the second over of their innings. Kane Williamson started to build his innings steadily but his progress was cut short in the 6th over of the innings when Hyderabad’s score was 39 runs. Williamson scored 17 runs off 16 deliveries hitting 3 fours during his stay. Rahul Tripathi decided to take on the bowlers at this stage. His counter-attacking brand of cricket gave much-needed momentum to the Hyderabad chase. At the halfway stage of the innings, Hyderabad was 95 for 2 down. With Rahul Tripathi looking in an aggressive mode the equation of 81 runs off 60 deliveries looked quite achievable for Hyderabad.

Tripathi continued with his attacking knock and completely changes the complexion of the game. Andre Russell dismissed Tripathi but not before he played a brilliant knock of 71 runs from 37 deliveries. He hit four fours and six sixes in his innings, before being dismissed in the 15th over. Aiden Markram continued steadily ta the opposite end and with the help of Nicholas Pooran guided Hyderabad to a comfortable victory. Hyderabad chased down the target in the 18th over of their innings with 7 wickets in hand. Markram (68 off 36) and Nicholas Pooran (5 off 8) remained unbeaten, as Hyderabad recorded their third consecutive victory.
