‘Upsets continue’ – Fans in a state of shock as Ireland beat England in 20-20 World Cup 2022
England and Ireland locked horns in the 20-20 World Cup 2022 on October 26, Wednesday at Melbourne Cricket Ground, and the Jos Buttler-led team asked Ireland to bat first. After losing Paul Stirling early in the innings for just 14 runs, skipper Andrew Balbirnie and Lorcan Tucker joined hands to lift the team up.
The duo put on an 82-run partnership for the 2nd wicket but Tucker made his way back to the dressing room after contributing 32 runs with the bat. Balbirnie and his men started falling apart right after that and lost wickets in quick succession.
The skipper, who reached the fifty-run landmark, returned to the pavilion for 62 runs while George Dockrell followed him quickly for a golden duck. However, the Ireland batters managed to put on a decent total of 157 runs on the board at the end of the first innings.
Ireland clinch an effective win
Concerning the chase from England, the skipper Jos Buttler perished for a duck on the very second ball of the innings as Joshua Little got the better of him with a good length outside off delivery. Alex Hales, the star batter who made his way back into the squad after knocking on the doors for several years, contributed only 7 runs with the bat.
England lost three main wickets including that of Ben Stokes within the powerplay and looked in deep trouble. Ireland bowlers kept picking up wickets at regular intervals, not allowing the batters to settle down.
Youngster Harry Brook also perished under pressure leaving England in all sorts of trouble at 67/4 in 11 overs. England lost the well-set Dawid Malan on the score of 86 after 13.1 overs as Ireland smelled a famous win. Moeen Ali tried his best to keep his side in the hunt with his knock of 24 off 12 balls before the heavens opened their doors and rain came pouring down to make matters worse for England.
The Three Lions were only 5 runs short as per the DLS method. Ireland, who toiled it hard right throughout the match, won it by 5 runs by the DLS method and clinched the crucial 2 points. This win for Balbirnie’s team might make come as a game-changer for the entire group as England are now in a position to win the remaining matches to make it to the Top 2.
