Two former champions of the BBL, Sydney Sixers, and Brisbane Heat locked horns at the Sydney Showground Stadium. The home team, Thunders won the toss and elected to field first. However, the decision started proving wrong as Australian internationals, Marnus Labuschagne and Usman Khawaja wreaked havoc on the Sydney bowlers. Despite taking the wicket of Josh Brown, Thunders didn’t have much to be happy about.

However, in the last over of the Heat’s innings, all-rounder Chris Green pulled off one of the greatest fielding efforts of the tournament. In the last over of the first innings, Labuschagne swatted Daniel Sams’ slower delivery from outside the off-stump towards long-on. It looked like going for six but Green had other ideas. He jumped up, got hold of the ball and threw it back inside the field of play to prevent a six.

Talking about the game, the 2012-13 winners amassed a competitive total of 203/5. Usman Khawaja (94) missed out on his hundred while Marnus got 73 runs. Apart from them, Matthew Renshaw played a cameo of eight-ball 24 helping the team reach such a total. Green, who pulled off one of the greatest fielding efforts of the tournament, took two wickets for 29 runs in four overs.

In reply, the 2015-16 winners, Sydney were 52/1 in 6.5 overs before the rain interrupted the game. At this point, they needed to be at 60 runs to remain ahead as per Duckworth-Lewis-Stern Method. To the misfortune of the home team, the rain didn’t relent and resulting in its premature end. This proved costly as the home side was knocked out of the tournament. On the other hand, Brisbane has advanced to the next knockout in which they will play the 2018-19 winners, Melbourne Renegades.
