The 2023 ODI World Cup began on Thursday with England and New Zealand playing each other. The game played at the Narendra Modi Stadium was the re-match of the 2019 ODI World Cup final. England had won the tournament on the back of a boundary after the game ended in a tie. Interestingly even the Super-Over ended in a tie between the two teams.

Tom Latham was named as the skipper of the side as Kane Williamson wasn’t fully fit. For the English side, there was a huge blow before the game could begin. Ben Stokes was ruled out of the game due to injury issues and missed the first game of the 2023 ODI World Cup.

New Zealand won the toss and chose to bowl first on a very hot and humid day in Ahmedabad. Teams chasing at Ahmedabad have had better success in the recent games played at this venue.

Daryl Mitchell comes up with superhuman fielding effort

Rachin Ravindra was bowling the 33rd over of the English innings to Jos Buttler. The Kiwi youngster bowled one short ball which the English skipper drove down the ground. The ball was racing to the boundary that’s when Daryl Mitchell stepped into the fray.

The Kiwi flung himself to stop the ball but the pace of the outfield was very quick. Despite his efforts the ball nearly hit the boundary ropes as Mitchell dove once again. This fielding effort stopped the ball from hitting the ropes as the batters settled from just 2 runs.

Put into bat, England scored 282 for 9 from their 50 overs and created a new record in the process. For the first in ODI cricket history, every batter had managed to reach double figures during the batting innings.

Joe Root was the top scorer with 77 runs from 86 balls with four boundaries and a six. Jos Buttler scored 43 runs from 42 balls with 2 fours and 2 sixes in his knock. The English batters got good starts but none of the players could manage to score big. Matt Henry led the bowling with 3 for 48. Santner and Glenn Phillips picked 2 wickets while Neesham and Rachin Ravindra picked a wicket each.
