The ongoing FIFA World Cup 2022 is under criticism from fans and critics alike because of the controversy around the venue. While the FIFA chief recently defended Qatar, Iran Men’s team has shown solidarity with the women’s rights protestor back home. Talking about the protests in Iran, it started with the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in morality police custody on September 16.

The girl died three days after she was arrested in Tehran over an alleged breach of the Islamic republic’s dress code for women, which includes the mandatory hijab headscarf. Meanwhile, ahead of the second game of the ongoing World Cup between England and Iran, the Iranian player refused to sing the national anthem.

For the unversed, it is a ritual for the players to sing the national anthem in international games in the sport just like cricket. Meanwhile, the bold stand taken by Iran players has become a big upheaval already. The video of the incident has been doing rounds on the internet. A lot of Twitter users from Iran have uploaded the video while some of them have registered their protests by other means.

The former champions asserted their dominance in the first half thanks to one goal each from the likes of Jude Bellingham (35′), Bukayo Saka (43′), and Raheem Sterling (45+1′). In the second half, Mehdi Taremi (65′) opened the scoring for Iran. However, the Iranians had no answer to England’s brilliance in the field.
