On December 20, 2021, Sydney Thunder signed Pakistani fast bowler Mohammad Hasnain. The 20-years-old fast bowler has played eight ODIs and 18 T20Is for Pakistan since making his debut in March 2019. Hasnain joined Ben Cutting in the Thunder team, who was his teammate at Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League.

On January 2, Hasnain made his BBL debut against Adelaide Strikers and came out to bowl the third over of the innings. The pacer had a fantastic outing and finished the match with figures of 20 for three in four overs, including a triple wicket maiden over.

He dismissed Matthew Short on the second ball of his first over and Jake Weatherald on the next delivery. The fourth ball of the over was a dot, followed by a wicket of Jonathan Wells for a duck on the fifth delivery. The last ball could have also brought another wicket if Henry Hunt had not placed his bat in front of a 143.6kph yorker. Thunder won the match by 28 runs after Strikers failed to chase down a target of 173 runs. Matthew Gilkes, who made 93 runs for Thunder, won the Player of the Match award.

In October 2019, Hasnain became the youngest bowler to take a hat-trick in T20Is at an age of 19 years and 183 days against Sri Lanka. In the first T20I, Hasnain dismissed Bhanuka Rajapaksa on the last ball of the 16th over. He came out to bowl the 19th over and dismissed Dasun Shanaka and Shehan Jayasuriya on the first two deliveries to complete his hat-trick.
