In the opening game of the ongoing Women’s 20-20 World Cup 2023, hosts South Africa locked horns with Sri Lanka. During the game, one of the batting pairs of the home team tried to take two risky runs. One of the batters played towards the on-side and asked for two runs. However, both had a severe misunderstanding after the first run. 

At one stage, both batters were pretty much at the same spot on the pitch. On the other hand, the Sri Lanka fielder threw the ball at the non-striking. However, the bowler who was standing at the bowling end to collect the ball. The another fielder collected the ball and threw it at the striking end. However, the wicketkeeper batter couldn’t execute the run out as they throw was wide.

Sri Lanka pulls off an upset in the Women’s 20-20 World Cup 2023

Meanwhile, in the game, the Lankan Lioness batted first and amassed 129/4. Skipper Chamari Attapaththu scored 68 runs off 50 balls. In reply, the Green Brigade lost the game by three runs. 

After the game, Chamari was adjudged Player of the Match. She said “Really happy… I tried to lead from the front. It was a team performance. South Africa are one of the best in the world, and playing at home. Vishmi is a superstar, our Under-19 captain. I just play my natural game.”

“There is good culture in the team. Players are very committed. The wicket was really good for batters; had I won the toss, I would have batted first. We have upset big teams on a couple of occasions… I hope my team can do better in this World Cup. Really happy to see the crowd here,” Attapaththu added.

“Sri Lanka had a good partnership; we lacked that partnership. I thought 130 was par score. The ball was coming on to the bat nicely. The World Cup still has a long way to go. Lot of positives going into the next couple of games,” Sune Luus said.
