Bangladesh lost the Super 4 stage match against Sri Lanka in the 2023 Asia Cup due to a not-so-good contribution from the batting unit. The Bangladesh tigers lost the match by 21 runs, chasing a target of 258 in R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Not many batters applied themselves from Bangladesh, barring Towhid Hridoy, who waged a lone battle against Sri Lanka.

The Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan was visibly disappointed with the batting performance. During the post-match conference, Shakib stressed the need to improve in the batting department. “Our batting is going downwards for the last six months (in ODIs) since the series against England and later Afghanistan, now in this tournament, and we need to work on it,” said the Bangladeshi captain.

‘Asia Cup before the World Cup is hugely beneficial’ – Shakib Al Hasan

The 36-year-old said that they are concerned about the batting of Bangladesh and working on the areas that need improvements. “We are concerned with our batting, and we need to see those areas and work on it so that we can rectify those areas. This tournament before the World Cup will be hugely beneficial because we need to have a reality check,” added Shakib.

The star all-rounder also felt the need to perform in big tournaments. “We always play well in bilateral series, and you cannot say we are a bad team, but our big test is taken in this kind of tournament where we don’t perform extraordinarily. We won three matches in 2007, 2011, 2015 and 2019 World Cup so people can say a lot of things but when we have a reality check usually, we fail,” felt Shakib.

Shakib, who has been a part of Bangladesh in World Cup since 2007, felt that it is good on a hindsight to think that Asia Cup is played before the ODI World Cup. “It is good that the tournament was played before the World Cup and everyone will think how we can solve this problem and only after that can we do better,” concluded Shakib.
