Bangladesh won the group stage match against Afghanistan comfortably by 89 runs in the Asia Cup 2023. Fine knocks from Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Najmul Hossain Shanto helped Bangladesh beat Afghanistan by a huge margin. As a result, Bangladesh stays alive in the tournament. On the other hand, Afghanistan has to win their last match in the group stage to stay alive in the tournament.

On a batting paradise in Lahore, Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat first. Shakib Al Hasan was proved right, as the Bangladeshi openers launched the attack on Afghanistan bowlers straightaway. Fazalhaq Farooqi bowled badly and conceded a lot of extras. Other bowlers like Mujeeb Zadran, Gulbadin Naib, Rashid Khan, and Karim Janat did not bowl well either.

It was the day of the two 25-year-old cricketers. Mehidy Hasan and Najmul Shanto, who batted Afghanistan out of the game. The duo frustrated the bowlers from Afghanistan and took the game away from them. Mehidy, who was promoted as an opener, scored 112 runs in 119 balls. Shanto scored 104 runs in 105 balls and helped Bangladesh by laying a fine platform for the finishers to fire.

Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam shine with the ball for Bangladesh

Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib provided the finishing touches for Bangladesh. In their 50 overs, the batting side ended with a mammoth total of 334 runs. Chasing the target, Afghanistan lost the wicket of Rahmanullah Gurbaz early. Barring the duo of Ibrahim Zadran and Hashmatullah Shahidi, no batter seriously put efforts to win the match for Afghanistan.

Towards the end, Rashid Khan tried his bit to save Afghanistan from an embarrassing loss. But it was just inevitable. For Bangladesh, the new ball pace duo of Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam bowled well. Taskin claimed 4 wickets and conceded 44 runs in his spell of 8.3 overs. The young Shoriful claimed 3 wickets in his 9 overs and conceded only 36 runs including a maiden over. Afghanistan will have to beat Sri Lanka in their last group stage match.
