In what came as a shocking defeat, FC Barcelona lost to Rayo Vallecano by a 1-0 margin on Sunday. For the unversed, this is the club’s third consecutive defeat at home for the first time. Earlier, they also suffered defeats at the hands of Eintracht Frankfurt and Cadiz. On Sunday, Barcelona went into the game with their strongest possible eleven. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang led the attack, while the likes of Ousmane Dembele and Ferran Torres were on the wings.

The midfield had the likes of Sergio Busquets, Frenkie de Jong and Gavi. Add to that, the likes of Ronald Araujo partnered and Eric Garcia were at the defence. Despite that, the home team gave their opposition the advantage as they netted a goal in just the seventh minute of the game. This saw them playing more aggressively but couldn’t score the second goal.

Barcelona saw a glimmer of hope in the 42nd minute of the game when Gavi came really close at the nets only for his strike to hit the underside of the bar. Barcelona put the opposition under immense pressure in the second half but weren’t able to break down a solid defence.

Ahead of the start of the game, Rayo Vallecano already were full of confidence as they were coming on the back of a win over Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium. However, prior to that, they couldn’t win a single game in the last 13 away matches.

Barcelona’s manager, Xavi has now lost seven games as a manager. Following the recent defeat, he stressed the fact the team need to ensure that they end the season behind Real Madrid and qualify for the Champions League.

“We were all fired up with the great run in the league and the Europa League,” Xavi told reporters. “I understand it’s not as motivating for the fans and players to fight for second place. But we have to be in the Champions League, we want to hear the Champions League music next season.

Meanwhile, Barcelona fans aren’t happy with the club’s recent performances. A lot of them took a dig at Xavi, following Barcelona’s underwhelming performances. Here’s a look at some of the reactions:
