‘Ye ek janam k hein’ – Twitter in absolute shambles as Sam Curran becomes costliest player in Indian T20 League history
England all-rounder Sam Curran entered the Indian T20 League 2023 player auction at a base price of two crores INR. He last played in the league in 2021 and missed out on this year’s edition due to workload management and recovery from injury. This time around, he was anticipated to go at a higher price given his performance in the 20-20 World Cup 2022.
However, the fans didn’t though that he will break the record of Chris Morris. The former South Africa all-rounder was bought by Rajasthan at 16.25 crores INR which was a record up until now. In the ongoing player auction, Curran has shattered the record by a long way. The 20-20 World Cup 2022 winner had been sold to Punjab for a price of 18.5 crores.
The first bid on the left-handed all-rounder was put in by Mumbai. After this, Bangalore made it a bidding war and both sides took it to six crores. At this point, three-time finalists decided to jump out and were replaced by Rajasthan. However, Mumbai wasn’t ready to give and gave tough competition to the Jaipur-based team. They took the bidding to 11.75 crores.
At this point, Chennai for which he played for in the 2020 and 2021 seasons, jumped into the bidding war. On the other hand, Mumbai decided to jump out of it. Now, Curran’s former team’s Chennai and Punjab locked horns to sign him. They took the war to a different level as the bid reached 15.25 crores when Lucknow jumped for a brief period. However, the Lucknow team moved out quickly.
On the other hand, when the bidding reached 16.5 crores, he became the costliest player in the history of the league. In the end, the 2014 finalist managed to nab Sam for a whopping price of 18.5 crores INR.
