‘Ye kuch zyada nahi ho gaya?’ – Fans react as Jasprit Bumrah is reportedly set to become vice-captain of India for 2023 Asia Cup

Jasprit Bumrah is set to become the vice-captain of the Indian team ahead of the 2023 Asia Cup, according to the reports. If what reports suggest is true, then it might be one of the most unexpected moves by Indian cricket. Hardik Pandya, who has been the Indian captain in Limited overs cricket for a long time now, will be disappointed with the move.  

Bumrah has just made his comeback to the Indian side after a couple of injuries. The Indian pace bowler made his return to the side with a sensational Player of the Match performance with the ball against Ireland in the first T20I. The 29-year-old pacer became the first Indian captain to win the Player of the Match award on captaincy debut in the shortest format of international cricket.  

It is worth debating if Bumrah should be given the responsibility of being the vice-captain of the side, given that he has been an injury-prone bowler. The fast bowler had reportedly asked the Indian management to lead the Indian team during the T20I series against Ireland. The post-injury Bumrah seems to be rather too hungry to perform, both as a bowler and as a leader.  

Advantage Indian cricket board with the decision

Under the leadership of Hardik Pandya, India recently lost the T20I series against West Indies. The Indian All-rounder was criticized by the fans, media, former cricketers, and experts for his bad captaincy. As a result, Pandya now has a negative image among the fans. Even the Indian cricket board received criticism for having Pandya as the captain.   

It might do good for the Indian board to appoint Bumrah the vice-captain of the team, as the pressure from Pandya can be transferred to a different path, which might help the All-rounder to concentrate on his performances. India is set to announce the squad for the 2023 Asia Cup soon. The fitness of Bumrah has been crucial for India. The pacer’s performance against Ireland can well give him a nod to perform in the big tournament.
