In the 32nd match of the ODI World Cup 2023, South Africa beat New Zealand by 190 runs. After a high-voltage performance from wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock, the Rassie Van der Dussen Proteas bowling attack outplayed New Zealand in the game. With this victory, South Africa almost confirmed their place in the semifinals of the tournament.

Earlier, in the game, New Zealand skipper Tom Latham won the toss and opted to bowl first. His decision didn’t go well with the team, as opener De Kock and Rassie Van der Dussen added 200 runs for the second wicket. In the end, a quick half-century from David Miller helped the Proteas cross the 350-run mark. Miller, in his inning, scored 53 runs off 30 balls with the help of two fours and four sixes. New Zealand pacer Tim Southee clinched two wickets, while Trent Boult and Jimmy Neesham got one each.

New Zealand batters faltered against South African pacers

Chasing a massive total of 357/4, New Zealand got the worst possible start. The team lost its first wicket for a mere eight runs as Marco Jansen dismissed Devon Conway. However, after his departure, Rachin Ravindra and Will Young tried to rescue Kiwis but eventually failed in an uphill task. After that, the team continuously lost wickets and plotted in the game.

Apart from Young, Daryl Mitchell, and Glenn Phliphs, not a single batter was able to cross the 10-run mark. Philips, in his innings, scored 60 runs off 50 balls with the help of four boundaries and as many sixes. In the end, New Zealand fell 190 runs short of the target. This loss has dented the Kiwis’ chances to qualify for the semifinals while enhancing Pakistan’s position in the race. In the 33rd game on Thursday, India will face Sri Lanka at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
