Babar Azam comes back into form ahead of Asia Cup 2023

28-year-old Pakistan captain Babar Azam finally found form during the ODI series against Afghanistan. After getting out for a duck in the 1st game, Azam scored 53 and 60 in the second and third games respectively. Post his 104 in the Lanka Premier League, Babar Azam could only manage 50 runs in the next 5 matches. Babar Azam led his Pakistan side to a 3-0 win over Afghanistan in the recently concluded ODI series. This series win helped Pakistan to move to the top of the ODI rankings.

The Pakistan captain made headlines just hours before the start of the tournament. Speaking to the media, Babar Azam voiced his thoughts on Pakistan not hosting the entire tournament. Babar Azam was heard saying “If you ask me, it would have been good if the whole tournament was held in Pakistan, but unfortunately, nothing can be done about it”. The decision to move the majority of the tournament to Sri Lanka was taken due to India’s reluctance to tour Pakistan. Speaking about the schedule, Babar Azam further said “As professionals we are ready for any schedule that is given to us. There would be traveling as well as back-to-back games and we are ready for that.”

The Pakistan captain was also asked the inevitable question of the big game on Saturday. India and Pakistan lock horns in a huge clash with both sets of fans eager to see the arch-rivals clash. Babar Azam said, “We want to continue with this momentum. Pakistan’s match against India will be a high-intensity game and we want to play our best cricket on the given day”. Pakistan will be the favorites for the 1st game against Nepal but a difficult road looms large going ahead in the tournament.
