Babar Azam began the 2023 Asia Cup in style as he scored his 19th One Day International ton for Pakistan. The 28-year-old started the tournament in fine form as he went after the Nepal bowlers on Wednesday. The capacity crowd at Multan Cricket Stadium was treated to some delightful shots courtesy of the Pakistani skipper.

Babar showed his full range of strokes against Nepal bowlers who were making their Asia Cup debut. The Pakistani captain became the fastest batter to reach 19 ODI tons in terms of innings played a batter. Winning the toss and batting first, the Pakistani openers departed early as the score read 25/2. Babar Azam then came into his own as he played some delightful shots and also rotated the strike.

Pakistani journalist’s tweet on Babar Azam goes viral

Farid Khan took to Twitter and wrote “Babar Azam is so consistent that even haters are slowly becoming his fans. Ma Shaa Allah”. The Pakistani skipper was regaling the capacity crowd with his brilliant stroke play en route to his 19th ODI century.

Babar Azam had scored two back-to-back-half centuries in the recent ODI series against Afghanistan. The Pakistan skipper had previously scored a ton against New Zealand when he scored 107 at Karachi. The Pakistanteam was struggling at 124/4 in the 28th over when Iftikhar Ahmed and Babar Azam combined. 32-year-old Iftikhar Ahmed playing his 15th ODI game scored his 2nd half century. The right-handed batter took the attack to the opposition just when it seemed like Nepal was coming back into the contest.

Nepal bowlers made a fine start to the game as they kept things tight at the start of the contest. Karan KC struck the first blow when he had Fakhar Zaman caught by the Nepal wicketkeeper for 14. Despite the early promise, Nepal fielders let down their bowlers as costly lapses cost the fielding team dear. Despite a sloppy show in the field, Nepal initially were looking sharp inside the thirty-yard circle. Imam Ul Haq and Mohammad Rizwan were run out for 5 and 44 respectively. Salman Agha who has been in excellent form in the test format was out early falling to leg-spinner Sandeep Lamichhane.
