Yet another major achievement for Neeraj Chopra ahead of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games
On Thursday (16 June 2022), the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) announced that the Olympic gold medalist javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra will lead the 37-member Indian athletics team. Out of those athletes, 18 are women including Dutee Chand and Hima Das.
This squad also got the likes of Avinash Sable and Jyothi Yarraji. Avinash broke his own national record in the 3000m steeplechase event for the eighth time recently. On the other hand, Jyothi broke her own NR twice last month in the 100m Hurdles event.

AFI President Adille J Sumariwalla requested the Indian Olympic association to increase its quota. Even, they requested to secure the accreditation of some athletes who haven’t proved their fitness. He said: “We are requesting the Indian Olympic Association to increase our quota by one and to assist in securing accreditation for a couple of athletes. We have also selected a few subjects to their proving their fitness and form before the Games.”
He also added that the expectation of a good show in Kazakisthan from athletes as some players are in rehab for injuries. “Shot putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor will have to perform well in Kazakhstan while Amoj Jacob has been selected subject to his recovery and fitness level. Similarly, Discus Throwers Navjeet Kaur Dhillon and Seema Antil Punia as well as Hammer Thrower Sarita Singh will have to perform in Kazakhstan or California. Race walker Bhawna Jat will have to prove her fitness” he concluded.
