Yuzvendra Chahal opens up on the simplicity of former Indian captain

Yuzvendra Chahal is currently busy with international commitments, as they are hosting South Africa for a five-match T20I series at home. However, this spinner hasn’t been at his best as India lost both matches. In these two matches, Chahal only managed to pick up one wicket at an economy of 12.16.

However, the spinner opened up a moment from his debut tour to Zimbabwe where he got the first opportunity to represent his country. He heaped high praises for the former Indian captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni due to his simple and unassuming nature.

“call me whatever, but not sir” – MS Dhoni to Chahal

Speaking on the YouTube show Breakfast with Champions, Chahal said that he was quite nervous to talk with him as it was his first time in National colours. He said: “I received the ODI cap from the great MS Dhoni. He is a legend and I was with him for the first time. I was not even able to talk in front of him. He talks so nicely that you wonder if he is really Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the legend,”

He also added that Dhoni told him to call him anything but not sir. “When I met him for the first time in Zimbabwe I used to call him Mahi sir. After a while, he called me over and said, ‘Mahi, Dhoni, Mahendra Singh Dhoni or Bhai…call me whatever you want, but no sir,” he concluded.

Recently, he ended the Indian T20 League 2022 as the highest wicket-taker as he picked 27 wickets in 17 matches. His performance were crucial for his Rajasthan franchise’s run-up to the final of this year’s league. Chahal received the ODI cap from Dhoni on the tour of Zimbabwe in June 2016 and grabbed 81 wickets in 46 ODIs at an average of 25.32 and an economy of 4.92 while playing alongside Dhoni. This leggie will be in action again when India will take on the Proteas for the third T20I in Visakhapatnam on 4 June 2022.
