Mumbai took on Bangalore in the 18th match of the Indian T20 League 2022. The match was held at the MCA Stadium in Pune.

Bangalore won the toss and continued the convention of the tournament deciding to field first. Mumbai started their innings on a great note. They reached the 50 runs mark without losing a wicket within the 7th over. It was in the same over  that Harshal Patel dismissed Rohit Sharma for 26 runs off 15 deliveries. As the skipper walked back to the pavilion, his team experienced a major collapse. They lost the next 5 wickets for just 29 runs and were 79 for 6 down in the 14th over.

Suryakumar Yadav however did not lose his cool and continued steadily at the opposite end. Jaydev Undakat, at the other end, kept handing the strike over to the more accomplished batter and ‘SKY’ kept the scoreboard ticking for his team. The seventh-wicket partnership for Mumbai remained unbeaten for 72 runs. Suryakumar Yadav scored 68 runs off 37 deliveries hitting 5 fours and 6 sixes. On the back of the brilliant fightback from Suryakumar Yadav and Jaydev Unadkat, Mumbai was able to post a total of 151 runs on the board. It was a great effort given the kind of position they were in, but on the pitch, it looked like 15-20 runs short of the par score.

Harshal Patel was the pick of the bowlers from Bangalore with 2 wickets from his 4 overs conceding 23 runs, Wanindu Hasaranga also picked up 2 wickets.

Bangalore had a steady start to their chase. The openers in Faf du Plessis and Anuj Rawat provided the solidity to the chase at the top. The duo scored 50 runs for the first wicket in 8 overs. The first ball of the 9th over by Jaydev Unadkat saw the back of Faf du Plessis for 16 runs from 24 deliveries. As Du Plessis walked back, Virat Kohli replaced him at the crease. Kohli and Rawat pressed the foot on the pedal at the right time and provided Bangalore with the dynamism they needed in the chase.  The duo continued with their dynamic display and never looked in much trouble. At the end of the 15th over the Bangalore score read 111 runs for the loss of 1 wicket. With 9 wickets in hand, 41 runs off the last 30 deliveries appeared easily achievable.

Anuj Rawat’s special effort off 66 runs rom 47 deliveries came to and end, because of a brilliant fielding display by Ramandeep Singh. He was run-out by a brilliant direct hit by the fielder. Virat Kohli was dismissed for 48 runs off 36 deliveries by Dewald Brevis. But by then the match was very much in Bangalore’s pocket. Glenn Maxwell walked out and slammed two consecutive boundaries as Bangalore won the match by 7 wickets with 9 balls still remaining in the match. Bangalore won their third match of the season, while Mumbai faced their fourth defeat on the trot.
