’25(26) and two catch drops. Shut it please’ – Fans divided as Alyssa Healy speaks on Harmanpreet Kaur’s bizzare run-out in Women’s 20-20 World Cup semifinal
Team India’s run in the Women’s 20-20 World Cup came to an end in the semifinal against Australia. While India looked set to reach their target of 173, skipper Harmanpreet Kaur’s bizarre run-out remained a key game-changing moment in the high-octane clash.
In the fourth ball of the 15th over, Harmanpreet Kaur swept Georgia Wareham between square-leg and deep mid-wicket and looked to get a couple of runs. However, the India skipper’s bat got stuck in the crease as she came back for the second run leading to a bizarre run-out that will go down as one of the unluckiest moments in the history of the game.
‘Harmanpreet can say all she likes that it was so unlucky’ – Alyssa Healy
Notably, it was Australia wicketkeeper Alyssa Healy who took off the bails to complete that bizarre yet important run-out. Later, she was seen talking to the media decoding that piece of play.
“It’s kind of funny actually. Belinda Clarke messaged me and said, well done for taking the bails. And it’s quite an interesting one because I actually don’t take the bails a lot in that sort of scenario. I think it’s a waste of time and I’ve got to put them back on,” Healy said.
“So, it’s annoying. But for some reason, I felt the need to take the bails off and it was like a bizarre moment where I looked at the umpire and said, I think that’s out. And I think Shooter at point was like. I also think that it’s out,” she added.
The replay clearly showed that the Indian skipper lacked effort while completing the second run. Healy was also of the same view. “So, just a bizarre play. Harmanpreet can say all she likes that it was so unlucky. At the end of the day, she cruised back and probably could’ve been passed the crease, an extra two meters if she genuinely put in the effort. So, we’ll take it,” Healy exclaimed.
Australia will now face South Africa in the final of the Women’s 20-20 World Cup to be played on Sunday. Notably, South Africa defeated England in another close semifinal by just 6 runs setting up a final date with the Aussies.
Here’s how fans reacted to Healy’s statements:

Cricket 101 always slide your bat

Why is she holding her bat back? Who runs like that!!! She could have touched the crease from a step back if only she extended her bat!!

Consider she was hospitalised a day before & you are bound to lose some energy after fielding for 20 overs & then bat again. She gave her everything just to play & make India win
We are so proud of her

True, she was so casual while running, it can be said unlucky but it was careless.

Looked really lazy running to me. No extension to slide the bat always a risk that it will catch. Could easily have jogged through and had the bat over the crease before keeper caught the ball if there had been more extension.

[…] Harmanpreet had scored a crucial 52 off 34 balls in the semi-final against Australia, but her bizarre run-out triggered India’s collapse, and they failed to score 16 runs in the final over. Schutt suggested that Harmanpreet’s reaction set the wrong precedent for her teammates, saying, “It was wrong of Harman to follow that after (reaction after being given out). It sets the wrong precedent for those coming after.” […]
