3 Times India played a World Event without their valuable players
Men in Blue are gearing up for the 20-20 World Cup in Australia later this month. After the Asia Cup heartbreak, the Indian team would be hoping to come up with better performance and hopefully come back with the trophy.
India however got a huge blow in the Asia Cup as Ravindra Jadeja was ruled out of the 20-20 World Cup due to a right knee injury. India’s woes compounded even further as a premium pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah was also ruled out of the ongoing South Africa series and looks doubtful for the World Cup as well. It looks like the team would be without two important players in this year’s mega event. This has however also happened in the past.
Let’s look at three instances when the India team went into a world event without their valuable players.
2007 T20I World Cup- Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar
Having done poorly at the ODI World Cup the same year, the Indian selectors chose a young team for the T20I World Cup. MS Dhoni was asked to lead a young side that had no Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar, India’s three most valuable players.
India did exceedingly well at the tournament and won the inaugural trophy, bringing home India’s only second World Cup in the history of the game.
