Things went heated up between these two former greats in 1983. India had a disastrous tour of Pakistan in the same year. Then, Kapil Dev became the captain and he won the World Cup. But, during a Test match in Chennai, Kapil Dev called for innings while Gavaskar was batting on 236* runs.
On the other hand, in 1984, Kapil Dev found himself on the bench for making an aggressive shot. It cost India the Test match against England in Delhi and his wicket. But, as per Gavaskar’s book One Day Wonders, Kapil felt that it happened only because of him. Although, he was not even present at the meeting of the selection committee.
