These two nations to be considered to organize Asia Cup 2022 in case Sri Lanka cannot host the event
The upcoming Asia Cup 2022 is scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka from 27th August to 11th September 2022. Speculations were rise that the venue might be changed as the Island nation is currently battling a major economic crisis.
However, a source close to ANI has said that Sri Lanka is confident to host the tournament despite the current circumstances in the country. Having said that, the final decision hasn’t been made and two more nations have been shortlisted to conduct the tournament in case Sri Lanka can’t hold the tournament.
“Sri Lanka Cricket officials and ACC President met on sidelines of Indian T20 League final in Hyderabad and during this meeting, officials told that they want to host the Asia Cup and are making arrangements for it. Sri Lanka Cricket Board is keen to host the event and they made their stand clear during the meeting,” said the source to ANI.
Earlier, ACC President Jay Shah had told ANI that he will be meeting SLC officials during the Indian T20 League 2022 final. The source, however, has added that the final decision on the hosting rights is yet to be made. It is pertinent to note that nations like Bangladesh and UAE are in the fray to host the tournament if Sri Lanka back out.
“It could also start before its original date, hoping that a decision will be made in a day or two and ACC will make an official announcement,” added the source.
For the unversed, Sri Lanka are currently battling severe economic crises. The nation is facing an extreme shortage of food and fuel. A large number of people’s livelihood has been affected amidst the ongoing economic condition in the nation. In addition to that, there has been an extreme shortage of foreign exchange, which has impact the country’s ability to import food and fuel.
The Indian Cricket Board has come forward to help the team get foreign money by agreeing to play 2 T20 internationals against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka before the Asia Cup. The schedule, however, is yet to be announced.
