“THAT was some chase!” – Fans Go Over The Moon As Sri Lanka Defeats Afghanistan In The First Match Of ‘Super Four’ In Asia Cup 2022
On 3 September 2022, Afghanistan took on Sri Lanka in the ongoing Asia Cup 2022. After the group stage, India, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan qualified for the super four. Speaking about form, Afghanistan won both of their matches in the group stage. On the other hand, Sri Lanka won a thriller against Bangladesh to keep themselves alive in this tournament.
In this tournament, they both met already in the tournament opener. Then, Afghanistan thrashed Sri Lanka by eight wickets. Hence, the stage was set for an enthralling encounter between these sides. Speaking about the match, Dasun Shanaka won the toss. Then, he elected to bowl first in Sharjah.

While batting first, Afghanistan openers started well against the Sri Lankan bowlers. They lost their first wicket on 46 runs in 4.5 overs. But, Rahmanullah Gurbaz played a blinder of an innings. He scored 84 runs off 45 balls, including four boundaries and six over-boundaries. With this inning, he became the highest run-scorer of this year’s Asia Cup until now. He scored 135 runs in three innings, at an average of 45. Afghanistan posted a good total of 175 runs by losing six wickets in 20 overs. Meanwhile, for Sri Lanka, only Dilshan Maddushanka picked up two wickets for 37 runs in four overs.
In reply, Sri Lankan batters started well. But, they lost their first wicket on 62 runs in 6.3 overs. Both the opener scored 35 and 36 runs respectively. But, they were in a spot of bother when they lost their captain, Shanaka in 14.1 overs. Till then, Sri Lanka scored 119 runs. Then, Bhanuka Rajapaksa came out to bat. But, he did not take a long time to hit some big shots. He got out for 31 runs off 14 balls only. But, Sri Lanka held their nerves and chased down the target with five balls to spare. They won the match by four wickets against Afghanistan.
