India took on South Africa at Perth Stadium in an attempt to reach the 20-20 World Cup 2022 semi-finals. The toss was won by Rohit Sharma, who chose to bat first. However, after losing a few early wickets, the team found itself in serious trouble. Captain Rohit Sharma and opener KL Rahul departed in the powerplay, while in-form Virat Kohli departed shortly after.

During this difficult period, Suryakumar Yadav rose to the occasion and led the team to a respectable total. The star batter was on top of his game, but it took him a while to settle in as wickets fell at the other end. He always kept the boundaries in check once he started scoring quick runs.

He scored a half-century here as well, continuing his form from the previous match. The Mumbai-born scored 68 runs in 40 balls by hitting six fours and three over the boundary rope. While other batters struggled to get going in the match, he had a strike rate of 170. India eventually scored 133/9 thanks to Suryakumar’s innings. Lungi Ngidi was the Proteas’ pick of the bowlers with his four-wicket haul. Wayne Parnell was also on fire, taking three wickets in the game.

India gets a solid start to their defence

In their defence, India got off to a great start with Arshdeep Singh taking the wickets of both openers in the second over. In the sixth over of the game, Mohammed Shami dismissed the in-form Rilee Rossouw. The Proteas were struggling at 24/3 after the powerplay.

Aiden Markram and David Miller, on the other hand, put on a brilliant partnership to help them get back into the game. Due to India’s poor fielding performance, the batting pair was able to put on a 76-run partnership. After completing his half-century, Markram (52) was finally dismissed by Hardik Pandya in the 16th over.

Miller eventually took the lead and began attacking Ravichandran Ashwin. He hit him for two sixes in the 18th over, but the bowler bounced back with Tristan Stubbs’ wicket. The equation came down to 12 runs in 12 balls. Shami then did well to concede just six runs in the 19th over despite being hit for a four.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar was handed the ball in the last over, but it turned out to be a nightmare for India. He gambled with a short ball after giving up a run on the second ball and was hit for a four by Miller. In the end, he stayed unbeaten on 59 runs in 46 balls to guide his team through. South Africa trashed India by five wickets in the 30th match of the tournament.
