Chennai skipper MS Dhoni gave a brutal warning to his bowlers about wides and no ball, which also can result in a slow over-rate. Chennai finally got their first win of the Indian T20 League 2023 after defeating the Lucknow franchise by 12 runs at the Chepauk stadium on Monday. Chennai posted a big total of 217 runs for the loss of 7 wickets, powered by the brilliant knocks by Ruturaj Gaikwad, (57 off 31) and Devon Conway (47 off 29). In the end, Dhoni smashed two sixes in the last which made the difference between both sides.
However, Lucknow also gave a tough fight with a brilliant start by the skipper KL Rahull and Kyle Mayers. Mayers continued his great form as he got out after smashing 53 off 22. After that Lucknow started losing wickets at regular intervals but still managed to score 205 for 7, just 12 runs short of Chennai’s total.
‘We are bowling too many extra deliveries and need to cut them out…’ – Dhoni
Although Chennai won the match, they ended up bowling 18 extra deliveries. Dhoni was not happy with so many wides and no-balls and said that the bowlers need to have control in their bowling. He also admitted that the fast-bowling lineup needs to improve and learn to bowl according to the conditions.
“They’ll have to bowl no balls and fewer wides. We are bowling too many extra deliveries and need to cut them out otherwise they’ll be playing under a new captain,” said Dhoni during the post-match presentation.
“It was a terrific game, a high-scoring game. All of us were thinking about how the wicket will be. We had that doubt. It was a high-scoring game. Overall I think it was a perfect first game that happened and it was a full house for the first game in 5 or 6 years since we’ve been,” he further added.
“I thought it will be much slower. It was a wicket where you could score runs but overall it got a bit slower. We’ll have to see how it plays over the next six games at home but hopefully, we can score here,” Dhoni concluded.
