On 2nd April, India celebrated 12 years of the 2011 World Cup triumph, when MS Dhoni hit the six off Nuwan Kulasekara’s delivery to clinch the title after 28 years. That winning shot from the Indian skipper has been in the minds of Indian cricket fans throughout the years. Team India won the World Cup in front of their home crowd at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai.

Now, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), has decided to make a memorial at the spot in the stands, behind long-on where Dhoni hit that winning six. MCA will also facilitate Dhoni who is likely to inaugurate the memorial on April 8th when his Indian T20 League team Chennai will take on Mumbai for match number 12 of the season.

“MCA Apex Council has decided to make a small victory memorial in Wankhede Stadium stands to commemorate the 2011 world cup victory. The memorial will be built at the location where MS Dhoni’s historic winning six had landed in the stands,” said the MCA President Amol Kale as quoted by InsideSport.

“MCA will approach MS Dhoni tomorrow and request for his time for the inauguration of the Memorial. MCA is hopeful that it will be inaugurated by MS Dhoni when he will be in Mumbai for Chennai’s match with Mumbai on 8th April. The date is yet to be finalised as it will completely depend on MS Dhoni’s consent and availability,” Kale added.

‘…It will inspire many youngsters to follow the footsteps of Captain Cool…’ – MCA Secretary

MCA secretary Ajinkya Naik believes that it will help the aspiring young cricketers in India to follow in the footsteps of the former Indian skipper and would be a ‘fitting tribute’ to his match-winning innings. “It would be a fitting tribute to MS Dhoni’s match-winning innings and we hope it will inspire many youngsters to follow the footsteps of Captain Cool in cricket,” Naik was quoted as saying.

It is noted that there will be another World Cup later in the year that will be hosted by India again. The Men in Blue will be looking to repeat the glory under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma in front of their home crowd, just like they did in 2011.
