Asia Cup 2023 is scheduled to kick start on August 30. The first match of the tournament is set to be played between Pakistan and Nepal in Multan, Pakistan. India will play their opening fixture of the Asia Cup against arch-rivals, Pakistan on September 2, in Kandy, Sri Lanka. The Chairman of Selectors, Ajit Agarkar, along with the Men in Blue skipper, Rohit Sharma, announced the 18-member squad for the Asia Cup 2023 in the press conference on Monday, August 21, in Delhi.
India has missed the likes of their star players like Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, and Jasprit Bumrah in major tournaments like the T20 World Cup in Australia, and the World Test Championship (WTC) final in 2023 in England. If we look at Rohit’s tenure so far, then he has not got the opportunity to opportunity to play with the strongest XI.

However, the star players except Pant have recovered from their injuries and they will make a comeback in the 16th edition of the Asia Cup. With the star players back in the squad, the youngsters like Yashashvi Jaiswal and Tilak Varma can lose their position in the squad despite performing really well in the recently concluded West Indies series. During the press conference, Rohit talked about this.
“Yeah, I mean look, it’s tough. I have been in that position myself many times, so I understand how it feels and how it is for someone who has been playing for a year and doing the job. But the guys who we are going to get in are proven players,” the Men in Blue skipper was quoted as saying in reply to a query from the Hindustan Times.
“They’ve scored loads of runs and won us so many games, so you obviously cannot neglect that part of their game. I do understand when guys like Tilak, Shubman, Surya, Sanju, Jaiswal, and many others… I may be forgetting a few names but these are the names that were there in West Indies. They have to wait for their time, they have to wait for the right opportunities. That is all I can say,” Rohit asserted.
