‘Nice acting Aussies, let’s see in WC’ – Fans react as India clinch ODI series 2-0 against Australia with massive win 2nd match
Team India registered an emphatic win over Australia in the second ODI to clinch the three-match series 2-0 with one game remaining. It was expected to be a highly contested series where the two cricketing giants locked horns, but the Men in Blue made it one-sided. India will enter the 2023 ODI World Cup as the No.1 side after their 99-run victory at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore on Sunday, September 24.
Australia’s stand-in captain Steve Smith sent the home team to bat first on a good wicket. Josh Hazelwood gave the visitors a boost by dismissing Ruthuraj Gaikwad early on. However, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer steadied the ship with a 200-run partnership. The two right-handers showed no mercy to the Aussie bowlers as they smashed them all over the park.
Both were in the race to complete the century, but the two parted ways soon after reaching the milestone. However, that didn’t stop India’s surge as captain KL Rahul and Suryakumar continued the onslaught. Both registered consecutive half-centuries and helped India to post their highest ODI total against Australia – 399/5.
Indian bowlers rattled the Australian batting unit
Chasing a mammoth score, Australia had a disastrous start as pacer Prasidh Krishna took two wickets in the second over. David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne then put together a short partnership, but Ravichandran Ashwin ensured that they did not trouble India much. The veteran spinner dismissed both and Josh Inglis in quick succession to give India the upper hand. Australia could not rise from that position and were eventually bowled out for 217 runs in 28.2 overs.
Speaking after the match, Player of the Match Shreyas Iyer said: “It was a rollercoaster right, feeling fantastic. My team-mates, friends and family were there for my support. I was seeing the matches on TV, I wanted to be out there and participate in the matches. Grateful to be believing in myself. The pain and niggles kept on coming, but I knew what I was aiming for. Glad that I was able to execute my plans perfectly today. Basically when I went in to bat, I didn’t want to complicate things. I wanted to get my eyes set, that’s how I give confidence to myself.”
