‘Dil dukh raha hai’ – Fans react as Babar Azam announces resignation from Pakistan’s captaincy across formats
Babar Azam has announced resignation from captaincy in all the formats of international cricket. The Pakistani cricketer took to X and announced his decision with a message to his followers. The move came from Babar following criticism of his captaincy during the ODI World Cup 2023. Pakistan did not have a good tournament as a team. But the blame for Pakistan’s loss went to Babar, which probably did not go well with him.
Babar recollected the experience he had as the captain of Pakistan cricket. “I vividly remember the moment when I received a call from PCB to lead Pakistan in 2019. Over the past four years, I’ve experienced many highs and lows on and off the field, but I wholeheartedly and passionately aimed to maintain Pakistan’s pride and respect in the cricket world,” wrote Babar on his social media.
Babar added that achieving world number 1 rankings in white-ball formats was a special moment for him. “Reaching the number one spot in the white-ball format was a result of the collective efforts of players, coaches, and management but I’d like to express my gratitude to passionate Pakistan cricket fans for their unwavering support during this journey,” added Babar.
‘It’s a difficult decision but I feel it is the right time for this call’ – Babar Azam
As Babar further talked about his decision, he expressed that it was difficult for him to announce the decision. Babar went on to add that the time has come for him to resign from captaincy. “Today, I am stepping down as the captain of Pakistan in all formats. It’s a difficult decision but I feel it is the right time for this call,” said Babar. Pakistan finished fifth in the ODI World Cup 2023.
Babar also said that he is open to helping the new captain to guide with his experience. “I will continue to represent Pakistan as a player in all three formats. I am here to support the new captain and the team with my experience and dedication. I want to express my sincere thanks to the Pakistan Cricket Board for entrusting me with this significant responsibility,” concluded Babar.
