In the second semi-final of the ODI World Cup 2023, South Africa faced the formidable 5-time world champions, Australia, at the iconic Eden Gardens, Kolkata. The match turned out to be a thrilling encounter, with the Australians being asked to bowl first by South African Skipper Temba Bavuma.

The Australian bowlers did not disappoint, picking up quick wickets and putting South Africa on the back foot. The Proteas were struggling at 24 for 4 when the in-form Rassie Van der Dussen got dismissed by Josh Hazlewood in the 12th over.

In this dire situation, South Africa’s star middle-order batsman, David Miller, came to the Proteas’ rescue. Miller joined forces with Henrich Klassen during a dark and gloomy period of play. The game also had to be stopped a few times due to rain but resumed after some time.

Miller scored some crucial boundaries and notched up a formidable partnership of 95 runs with Klassen, who was dismissed by part-time spinner Travis Head. Despite South Africa continuously losing wickets at the other end, Miller kept going.

David Miller: A century to remember!

Miller reached his century in style, hitting Pat Cummins out of the park. He then got out in the same over, but not before ensuring that South Africa reached a total they could at least try to defend.

Miller scored 101 runs off 116 balls, tackling the mighty Aussie bowling line-up that was asking questions all the time. His 101 became almost 50% of the total scored by South Africa, as the Proteas were bowled out for 212 in the 50th over. In his 101, Miller hit 8 boundaries and 5 sixes.

With this innings, Miller reached 356 runs in this year’s World Cup. He had earlier scored only one 50+ score and a few 30s in this year’s World Cup, majorly because the top-order batsmen of the Proteas have performed exceptionally well throughout.

Despite the odds, Miller’s performance stood out, making him the lone warrior in Proteas’ battle against Australia.
