SA vs IND: Dean Elgar approaches match officials to discuss Rassie van der Dussen’s dismissal
India and South Africa are currently battling it out in the second Test of the India tour of South Africa. India won the toss and elected to bat on Day 1 but were bowled out for a mere 202. On the second day, South Africa started the proceeding with 35 runs on the board for the loss of one wicket. Shardul Thakur dismissed Dean Elgar to pick the first wicket for India on day two and Rassie van der Dussen joined Keegan Petersen in the middle.
In the 43rd over, Thakur struck again and dismissed Petersen for 62 runs. In his next over, Thakur managed to dismiss van der Dussen for one run behind the wicket. Umpires called lunch after this dismissal and van der Dussen walked back because he had edged the ball. However, replays raised a doubt whether the ball actually carried to Rishabh Pant or not.
According to Cricinfo, Elgar and South African team manager Khomotso Masubelele met the match officials to discuss this dismissal. They had a discussion with Marais Erasmus and Allahudien Palekar, the on-field umpires, third umpire Adrian Holdstock, and match referee Andy Pycroft.
However, it was not clear what the South African camp wanted from the officials.
A couple of replays from every angle suggested that there was no conclusive evidence to get to a point. The rule suggests that if there had been a piece of conclusive evidence, the third umpire had the option to reverse the decision given by the on-field umpires. However, in the absence of solid evidence, the third umpire can’t make any changes.
After Petersen’s half-century, Temba Bavuma also joined the party with a half-century and it looked like South Africa might gain a significant amount of lead. However, Thakur had other plans and dismissed six South African batters. At the end of their inning, South Africa could take only a lead of 27 runs.
