Aakash Chopra has given his opinion on the lack of Test matches in the ongoing Test series between India and South Africa. It is the least for a series between the two sides in a long time. “Anything less than a three-match series is a disservice to Test cricket. All the talk about protecting Test cricket and being its guardian does not mean we are doing what’s necessary.

The fact that two world-class sides are playing only 2 Test matches in a series involving sides like India and SA has not gone well with Chopra. “We need to walk the talk. We are playing a two-Test series because if teams play a single match, then it can’t be called a series. It has to be a minimum of two matches,” added Aakash while speaking in an interview.

The statement of Aakash coincides with the opinion of many that playing only 2 Test matches in a series does not do justice to the teams. Aakash added that there should be at least 3 matches in a Test series, particularly when 2 top sides play each other. Aakash felt that the boards were conducting the Test series for the sake of doing it.

Give Test cricket the status it deserves – Aakash Chopra

The former Indian opener said that the teams play four to five matches against top sides like Australia and England, but not do the same against South Africa. “So, it’s just like fulfilling that minimum commitment and leaving. You play five matches against Australia; you play five against England. South Africa are the third major side. But we are doing South Africa a disservice,” added Chopra in his statement.

Chopra felt that Test cricket is not receiving the attention it deserved. The former Indian opener said that the boards must walk the talk if they believe in Tests being the supreme format of the game. “We are doing a disservice to Test cricket by playing a two-match series. If you are saying Test cricket is supreme, then give it the status it deserves,” said Chopra as he batted for more Test matches between India and SA.
