In the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023, Afghanistan beat Sri Lanka by 7 wickets at MCA Stadium in Pune. With their second consecutive victory in the tournament, Afghanistan increased their chances of qualifying for the semifinals. After a quality bowling performance, skipper Hasmatullah Shahidi led Afghanistan to victory with his batting performance.
Earlier in the game, after winning the toss, Afghanistan skipper Hasmatullah Shahidi opted to bowl first. A decision that shocked experts but proved right for the emerging South Asian power Pacer Fazalhaq Farooqi dismissed Dimuth Karunaratne for a mere 15 runs. After his departure, Sri Lanka skipper Kusal Mendis, along with Pathum Nissanka, added 62 runs for the second wicket.
However, as soon as both batters were dismissed, the Sri Lankan innings started derailing. Mendis in his innings scored 39 runs off 50 balls with the help of three boundaries, while Nissanka in his innings scored 46 runs off 60 balls. In the end, some quick innings from Angelo Mathews and Maheesh Teekshana helped Sri Lanka cross the 240-run mark. For Afghanistan, pacer Farooqi clinched four wickets.

Chasing a competitive total, Afghanistan had a poor start as opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz was dismissed for a four-ball duck. After his departure, Ibrahim Zadran, along with Rahmat Shah, added 73 runs for the second wicket. Zadran, in his inning, scored 39 runs off 57 balls with the help of four fours and a six. Meanwhile, Rahmat, in his innings, scored 62 runs off 74 balls with the help of seven fours.
After their departure, skipper Hasmatullah Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai added an unbeatable 111 runs for the fourth wicket. Shahidi, in his inning, scored an unbeaten 58 runs off 74 balls with the help of two fours and a six. Meanwhile, Omarzai, in his inning, scored 73 runs off 63 balls with the help of six fours and three sixes. With this victory, Afghanistan increased their chances of qualifying for the semifinals. The team will now need to win all of their remaining games to finish in the top 4.
