‘Ab Lanka dahan India hi karegi’ – Fans react as Sri Lanka win their first match of Super 4 clash against Bangladesh in Asia Cup 2023
The 2nd match of the Super 4 clash in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 was played on Saturday, September 9 at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The Sri Lankan squad defeated the Bangladeshi team by 21 runs thanks to their excellent bowling performance.
Speaking of the game, Bangladesh chose to bowl first after winning the toss. The squad got off to a terrific start thanks to Bangladesh’s openers, but Dimuth Karunaratne was out for 18 runs in the sixth over. However, Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis later put up an outstanding 74-run partnership for the second wicket.
Mendis smashed his half-century and left after hitting 50 runs, which included 6 fours and 1 six, while Nissanka returned to the pavilion on 40 runs. Samarawickrama played a superb knock of 93 runs, which came off just 72 balls, as Sri Lanka’s middle order struggled mightily. He blasted 8 fours and 2 sixes during the innings.
With three wickets each, Taskin Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud were Bangladesh’s most effective bowlers. Mahmud gave up 57 runs, while Ahmed gave up 62 runs. Shoriful Islam was also successful in getting 2 wickets. As a result of losing 9 wickets in 50 overs, Sri Lanka was restricted to 257 runs.
Brilliant bowling performance by Dasun Shanaka
Mohammad Naim and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Bangladesh’s opening pair, gave the team chasing the mark a strong start as they put together a 55-run partnership for the first wicket. However, by removing both Naim and Miraz from the game, Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanka made two crucial breakthroughs.
Shakib Al Hasan, the captain of Bangladesh, couldn’t contribute much, leaving the game with just 3 runs. Later, Mushfiqur Rahim and Towhid Hridoy put up a 72-run partnership for the fifth wicket, but Shanka struck again in the 38th over, dismissing Rahim. Despite making a valiant effort and scoring 82 runs, Maheesh Theekshana bowled Hridoy out in the 44th over.
Later, no other batter could contribute to the score because they were limited to 236 runs. With three wickets each, Theekshana, Shanka, and Matheesha Pathirana each won their first game of the Super 4 match.
