After defeating the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the last fixture of the group stage, defending champions, Gujarat Titans (GT) locked horns with the four-time champions, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 16th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) at the MA Chidambaram, in Chennai. Super Kings won the match by 15 runs and entered the final for the 10th time in the history of IPL and Ruturaj Gaikwad was awarded the Player of the Match award for his match-winning performance.

GT skipper, Hardik Pandya won the toss and opted to bowl. CSK, while batting first, scored a total of 172 runs with the loss of seven wickets after the completion of the first innings. The highest scorer for the side was their opener, Gaikwad, who scored 60 runs off 44 balls with seven fours and a six in his innings. Star New Zealand batter, Devon Conway scored 40 runs from 34 balls, which included four boundaries in his innings.

For GT, the pick of the bowlers were Mohammad Shami and Mohit Sharma in their respective spells of four overs where they conceded 28 runs and 31 runs, respectively, in their spells. One wicket each was grabbed by Darshan Nalkande, Rashid Khan, and Noor Ahmed in their respective spells, where they conceded 44 runs, 37 runs, and 29 runs, respectively.

While chasing the target, the home side was able to score only 157 runs before getting bundled out for 157 runs in their 20 overs.  The highest scorer for the side was Shubman Gill, who scored 42 runs from 38 balls with four boundaries and a six in his innings. In the end, Rashid played a quickfire knock of 30 runs from just 16 balls with three fours and two sixes in his innings but that was not enough for his side.

“Last 3-4 games in Chennai have been different. First few games wicket was better. Have had to adapt. Look to rotate strike, capitalise on loose deliveries. Both are great players (Conway and Faf). Faf was someone who was aggressive from ball one. Conway has great batsmanship. I would say the knock of 60 (what was more satisfying – 60 or the catch),” Gaikwad was quoted as saying in the post-match presentation.
