In the second and final Test match between West Indies and India in Port of Spain, the visitors scored 438 runs in their first innings, courtesy of a splendid hundred by Virat Kohli. In response, West Indies have shown discipline, strength and resistance to hold the Indian barrage. The West Indians managed to get off to a positive start on Day 3 just as they did on Day 2 with the bat. They were 86/1 overnight, with Kirk McKenzie leading the way on Day 3 along with captain Kraigg Brathwaite.

The first wicket to fall was Kirk McKenzie for 32 off 57 balls with four fours and one six. He was caught behind by Ishan Kishan off Mukesh Kumar to give the Bengal pacer his maiden Test wicket. West Indies were 117/2, 321 runs behind India, when captain Kraigg Brathwaite was bowled by Ravichandran Ashwin shortly after lunch, having hit 75 runs in 235 balls. They were 229 for 5 at Stumps on Saturday, trailing India by 209 runs in the second Test in Trinidad.

Indian bowlers toil hard for wickets on flat surface

Jermaine Blackwood scored 20 runs off 92 balls and was dismissed by Ajinkya Rahane following a superb catch in the slip off Jadeja’s ball shortly after tea. Blackwood knocked in 20 runs off 92 balls. Right before another rain delay, Joshua Da Silva was clean bowled for 10 runs while attempting to drive Mohammed Siraj.

India eventually took the new ball in the 103rd over. But Athanaze and Jason Holder stayed unscathed till stumps. Athanaze had 37 runs from 111 balls, while Holder had 11. West Indies finished the day at 229-5. They simply need 10 more runs to force India to bat again. The hosts would be happy with a draw and must have discussed putting a price on their wickets following a shambolic batting performance in the series opener. The hosts were thrashed by an innings and 141 runs in their first World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle.

Only 57 overs of play was possible as there were two rain interruptions on Day 3. Also bad light forced umpires to not make full use of the extended time that was available to complete the overs. India will need quick wickets to force off for a win.
