A strange incident took place on the second day of the Test match between India and West Indies at Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain, in Trinidad on Friday, July 21. When Ravindra Jadeja was batting, and was caught behind, the fielders appealed but the umpire didn’t give him out as it was not exactly clear whether he had edged it or not.

The visitors were on 360 runs for the loss of five wickets in the 104th over of their innings when the left-hand batter tried to drive a wide ball outside off stump in Kemar Roach’s over. The wicketkeeper, Joshua Da Silva started celebrating as he was pretty sure that Jadeja has nicked the ball. However, Jadeja didn’t respond to the appeal, and the on-field umpire, Marais Erasmus also didn’t raise his finger.

The hosts challenged the decision as they went for the Decision Review System (DRS),  The replay which was relayed by TV umpire Michael Gough was contrasting for the ball or in which the review was taken. In the replay, that was seen by the third umpire, it was observed that there was not much gap between Jadeja’s bat and pad. The actual delivery indicated that a gap was present between the bat and pad and that the left-hander had played the ball away from his body.

Later in the Tea break on Day 2, the host broadcasters claimed that a glitch had taken place during the DRS decision related to Jadeja’s dismissal. Hwever, it was made clear that the decision was made despite the error. Also, during the commentary, former West Indies cricketers Curtly Ambrose, Samuel Badree, and Daren Ganga clarified the controversy as footage of the right replay was played.

“This is the actual replay and the ball part. There was no contact with bat on pad. This is the correct UltraEdge. And the right decision was made in the end, that is the most important thing. Just to clear that issue up and basically set the record straight, no fault of the umpires or the system, it’s just a glitch that took place,” the West Indies legend was quoted as saying.
