The 142nd edition of the US Open kicked off on 23 August 2022. However, the current world number one, Novak Djokovic was not allowed to play this event again. Stacey Allaster, the US Open Tournament Director opened up the main reason behind Djokovic’s exclusion from this year’s tournament. He said that Djokovic will not be playing “as he is unable to enter the country due to the federal government’s vaccination policy for non-US citizens.”

However, Djokovic also shared the same news with his fans on his Twitter account. He wrote: Sadly, I will not be able to travel to NY this time for US Open. Thank you #NoleFam for your messages of love and support. Good luck to my fellow players! I’ll keep in good shape and positive spirit and wait for an opportunity to compete again. See you soon tennis world!”

Novak Djokovic has always been clear regarding the Covid-19 vaccination

Novak Djokovic always was clear about not getting vaccinated even if he misses any grand slam event. Before Wimbledon, he spoke with BBC regarding the same matter only. He said: “I was never against vaccination. But I’ve always supported the freedom to choose what you put in your body. I understand that globally, everyone is trying to put a big effort into handling this virus and seeing, hopefully, an end soon to this virus.”

Even, former Tennis great and four-time US Open winner, John McEnroe also showed support to the Serbian. He said that it will be an absolute joke if he misses the next edition of the US Open just for not being vaccinated. He said: “I don’t think it’s fair, I think it’s a joke. I would have had the vaccine and gone and played but he’s got very strong beliefs and you have to respect that. At this point, in the pandemic, we’re two-and-a-half years in, I think people in all parts of the world know more about it, and the idea that he can’t travel here to play, to me is a joke.” Now, even fans have shown their support to the world number one on Twitter with their views.
