Leaving the cricketing world in disbelief and shock, another legend of cricket passes away. The former Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds was involved in a car accident. The incident is reported to have taken place in the outskirts of the city of Townsville on Sunday (15th May) morning. The tragic accident has led to the fall of one of the brightest stars in the cricketing galaxy.

Symonds was aged 46 and has left behind his wife Laura and two young children Chloe and Billy. He is regarded as one of the greats of the modern era. Symonds was an important cog of the Australian team during the 2000-2010 decade. He was a utility player who could have changed the complexion of any match batting anywhere in the batting order. In the case of bowling also, his exploits were not limited to only one skill as he was equally adept in bowling off-spinners and medium pace. On the back of his multidimensional performances, Australia registered many memorable wins. Unfortunately, such a legend of the game has breathed his last.

The police issued a statement, which read-“Early information indicates, shortly after 11 pm the car was being driven on Hervey Range Road, near Alice River Bridge when it left the roadway and rolled. Emergency services attempted to revive the 46-year-old driver and sole occupant, however, he died of injuries. The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating.”

As per a report by NewsCorp, Symonds’ family has confirmed the tragic development. They have acknowledged peoples’ sympathies and condolences but have also asked for sympathy.

Speaking of Symonds’ cricket career, he made his international debut in 1998. He played a vital role in Australia’s World Cup wins in 2003 and 2007. In his playing career, he featured in 26 Tests, 198 ODIs, and 14 T20Is. He has scored close to 7000 international runs and has more than 150 wickets to his name. He was last seen in the Australian colors in 2009. he was also a part of the Indian T20 League, and played for the Hyderabad and Mumbai franchise. The cricketing fraternity will surely miss the legend.
