Kolkata faced off against Hyderabad in the 61st match of the Indian T20 League 2022. MCA Stadium in Pune hosted the match on a pitch that had a fair bit of assistance for the bowlers.

Kolkata won the toss and decided to set a target for their opposition. They lost Venkatesh Iyer (7 of 6) in the second over of the innings and received a shock at the start. Nitish Rana came in at number three and steadied the ship with a 48 runs partnership with Ajinka Rahane. The partnership was broken in the 8th over when Umran Malik dismissed Nitish Rana (26 of 16). The Men in Purple lost a few quick wickets after this and were struggling. They were 94 for 5 after losing four wickets in an interval of 29 runs. Andre Russell walked in at this stage and played an impactful knock. He emphasized on progressing steadily at the beginning thus forming a partnership with Sam Billings. The duo stitched a partnership of 63 runs from 44 balls and ensured their team reach a par total at the least.

Billings (34 of 29) was sent back to the pavilion in the 19th over of the innings. Hyderabad’s score at the end of the 19th over was 157 runs for the loss of 6 wickets. But Russell (49 of 28) decided to take Kolkata to a formidable total with his exploits in the last over. He smashed Washington Sundar for three sixes in the 20th over and picked up 20 runs in total from it. With that Kolkata reached a formidable total of 177 runs from their 20 overs. The score looked like a big one given the behavior of the pitch in the first innings. Umran Malik was the pick of the bowlers for Hyderabad. He picked up three wickets for 33 runs from his 4 overs.

Hyderabad batters struggled to score runs on a slowish pitch from the very beginning of the innings. Kane Williamson (9 of 17) failed to give his team a good start once again. He was the first wicket to fall for Hyderabad in the 6th over when the team’s score was 30 runs. Rahul Tripathi (9 of 12) soon followed his skipper in the ninth over and left his team with a score of 54 for 2. Abhishek Sharma however, was looking in prime touch at the opposite end. He was taking on the main bowlers of Kolkata and keeping Hyderabad in the hunt. After the 10th over of the match, Hyderabad was stationed at 66 for 2 wickets needing 112 runs in the last 10 overs.

Abhishek Sharma (43 of 28) was dismissed in the 12th over by Varun Chakravarthy and with that wicket, Kolkata started to tighten their grip on the match. The only other batter who posed a threat to Kolkata, Aiden Markram (32 of 25) was dismissed in the 15th over of the innings. After his dismissal, Hyderabad needed 78 runs off 30 balls and with only five wickets in hand the equation looked too tough o be achieved. The ultimately fell short of the target by 54 runs being restricted to 123 runs for 8 wickets in their 20 overs. Andre Russell was the pick of the bowlers for Kolkata with three wickets for 22 runs from his four overs. This was Kolkata’s sixth win in 13 matches and their hopes of making to the playoffs is still alive. Hyderabad on the other hand lost their 7th match in 12 outings.
