‘Attacking champions ghar jaakar defend karenge cup’ – Fans react as Australia defeat England by 33 runs in ODI World Cup 2023
The number 36 of the ODI World Cup 2023 saw the five-time World Champions, Australia take on the defending champions, England. The game eventually came out as expected from the fans considering the rich history of both these cricketing rivals. In the end, Australia won the match by 33 runs and with this win, they have sent their arch-rivals out of the World Cup 2023. With this win the Australian team has also strengthened their chances of qualifying for the Semi-Finals of the World Cup 2023.
At the start of the game, England’s skipper Jos Buttler won the toss and elected to ball first. The defending champions had a dream start to the match as Chris Woakes got the wickets with both the in-form batters, David Warner (15) and Travis Head (11) inside six overs. Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne formed a valuable partnership to resurrect the Australian innings. Smith contributed 44 runs from 52 balls, while Labuschagne was the standout performer, scoring 71 runs off 83 deliveries. But England kept on taking wickets at regular intervals to keep themselves in the game. The star all-rounder Cameron Green (47) along with Marcus Stoinis (35) provided some impetus to the Aussie’s batting. But it was Adam Zampa at the end who provided the finishing touches to the innings and helped Australia post a total of 286 runs on the board.
Adam Zampa star with the ball in hand
Australia successfully defended their total of 287 by taking early wickets, including Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root. Adam Zampa played a pivotal role in the middle overs, delivering an outstanding spell that included 3 key wickets while conceding only 21 runs in his 10-over quota. Zampa dismissed the dangerous Jos Buttler (1) and removed the well-set Ben Stokes (64) and Moeen Ali (42). Both Ali and Stokes looked good in the 63 runs but were dismissed off the beautiful delivery from the star leg spinner.
England’s lower-order batsmen, including Chris Woakes (32), Adil Rashid (20), and David Willey (15), made a valiant effort to resurrect the innings, but their contributions were insufficient due to the top-order batsmen’s failures. Australia’s victory significantly enhanced their chances of reaching the tournament’s semifinals. For his match-winning effort, Zampa was also adjourned as Player of the Match.
