‘Bairstow bhai kuch bhi kar sakte hain’ – Fans react to Jonny Bairstow carrying out pitch invader off the field during 2nd Ashes 2023 Test
On Wednesday, June 28, the second match of the Ashes series at the Lord’s in London got off to a dramatic start when a protester barged onto the pitch just after James Anderson bowled the first over. Jonny Bairstow, the wicketkeeper for England, casually lifted the man and dumped him over the boundary ropes. In order to change his outfit, the 33-year-old hurried upstairs to the changing room. The ground workers arrived at the pitch side in the interim. Following a little pause, the play started up again.
The Yorkshire-born batsman will try to perform behind the stumps as he squandered a stumping opportunity and fumbled catches in Australia’s two-wicket victory over England in the opening Ashes Test at Edgbaston. The protest happened a day following the England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) response to the ICEC report, apologising for prejudice in England’s cricket. It is unclear if the protest is connected to the aforementioned problem.
“Joe is really enjoying the challenge and is turning into a genuine all-rounder.” : Ben Stokes
Ben Stokes, the captain of England, decided to field first against Australia on Wednesday. Josh Tongue has been added as Moeen Ali’s replacement. After winning the toss, Ben Stokes said, “We are gonna have a bowl. Overhead conditions played a massive part and the surface looks good to have a bowl as well. Disappointed not having Woody, but Tongue is a like-for-like replacement. Joe is really enjoying the challenge (with the ball) and is turning into a genuine all-rounder.”
On the other side, Australia’s starting XI included Mitchell Starc once again ahead of Scott Boland. While Nathan Lyon needs five more scalps to get 500 Test wickets, Cummins praised Lyon for being the first spinner to play 100 straight Tests. Cummins, after losing the toss, said, “Not only in terms of fitness (speaking about Lyon), but getting picked in all conditions and playing 100 Tests on the trot is a phenomenal achievement.”
