Bangalore had the chance to seal their spot in the playoffs on Friday in the match against Punjab. However, Mayank Agarwal and Co. beat them convincingly by 54 runs to ruin all their hopes. With that win, Punjab have kept their hopes alive of making a top-four finish. Punjab registered their 6th win and reached to the 6th position on the points table. Batting first, the Men in Red managed to score a mammoth score of 209 runs on the board. Jonny Bairstow gave the team a sensational start with the bat. He took on the opposition right from the onset of his innings.

The English batter began his onset with two sixes and two fours off Josh Hazlewood in the second over of the innings. He then smacked Mohammed Siraj three sixes and one four to help team end the power play at 83 for 1. Shikhar Dhawan, however, got out bowled off Maxwell after scoring 21 runs in 15 balls. Bairstow, however, kept going for next three overs and took Punjab to 100-run mark in just 9 overs. He got out on the first ball of the 10th over off Shahbaz Ahmed after scoring a brilliant knock of 66 runs in 29 balls.

Hasaranga and Harshal Patel tried to bring Bangalore back into the game by picking wickets at regular intervals. However, Liam Livingstone, at the other end, was smacking the bowlers to parts of the grounds. He kept smashing the balls for fours and sixes and helped the team reach 200-run mark. Livingstone got out in the final over of the innings but not before smashing 70 runs in 42 balls, including 5 fours and 4 sixes.

As for Bangalore, Hasaranga was, once again, brilliant with his lengths. He finished with impressive figure of 2 for 15 in 4 overs. Harshal Patel bowled all his four overs in the latter half of the innings when Livingstone was tonking the ball right, left and center. Still, he conceded 33 runs and took 4 wickets in his quota of overs.

In pursuit of the score, Faf du Plessis and Co. started off the chase positively as Virat Kohli scored two fours and a six, giving his fans hope of getting back to form. Bangalore had scored 31 runs inside the first three overs. However, luck hasn’t been Virat Kohli’s side. He, unfortunately, got out in the 4th over off Rabada after scoring 20 runs in 14 balls. Skipper, Faf du Plessis too failed to deliver with the bat. He edged one behind to the keeper in the very next over and two balls later, Mahipal Lomror was caught at mid-wicket to leave Bangalore in all sorts of trouble at 41 for 3 in 5 overs.

However, Glenn Maxwell then joined hands with Rajat Patidar and the duo stitched a 64-run partnership for the fourth wicket to revive the innings. Both the batsmen played shots and kept the required rate in check. RCB were 95 for 3 at the half way stage.

However, Punjab, once again, pulled things back in the next five overs. Rahul Chahar got rid of Rajat Patidar (26 off 21) on the last ball of the 11th over. One ball later, Harpreet Brar had Glenn Maxwell (35 off 22) caught at long off. Wickets fell falling at regular intervals, thereafter and RCB, in the end, could only manage to score 155 runs in the second innings, thereby falling 54 runs short of the target.

Here’s a look at how the fans reacted to the win:
