‘Bangalore has been Tewatiaed’: Twitter hails Rahul Tewatia as southpaw guides Gujarat to yet another win
Gujarat faced off against Bangalore in the 43rd match of the Indian T20 League 2022 at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. Both the teams fought hard and gifted a thriller to the fans.
Bangalore won the toss and became the second team in the tournament to choose to bat first. The men in red and black did not start well as they lost skipper Faf du Plessis (0 of 4) in the second over of the innings. The team’s score at this stage was 11 runs. But to the relief of the whole cricketing fraternity, it looked like that Virat Kohli has regained his touch. Rajat Patidar played a great supporting role to Kohli and the duo stitched a partnership[ of 99 runs. Kohli rotated the strike and it seemed that his old self was slowly returning. Patidar at the other end was playing the aggressor allowing Kohli enough time to feel good about his batting. It was in the 15th over of the inning that Patidar was dismissed by Pradeep Sangwan. He played a brilliant knock of 52 runs of 32 balls hitting five fours and two sixes. His innings alongside Kohli ensured Bangalore a strong foundation depending on which they could have posted a big total.
But Patidar’s departure was soon followed by Virat Kohli in the 17th over. He played a steady knock of 58 runs from 53 deliveries and held the innings together for the men in red and black. The most important fact of Kohli’s innings was that it relieved the fans of Bangalore and India alike that ‘The King’ has found back his rhythm. Coming back to the match, Kohli’s dismissal resulted in a few more wickets, as the other batter tried to up the scoring rate. Maxwell played a short little cameo of 33 runs off 18 deliveries as Bangalore reached 170 runs from their 20 overs. Pradeep Sangwan playing his first match of the tournament was the pick of the bowlers for Gujarat picking two wickets for 19 runs from his four overs.
Gujarat has a great start to their chase as Wriddhiman Saha took the attack on the bowlers. They scored 46 runs in the powerplay overs without losing a wicket. But as the powerplays lifted the Bangalore bowlers slowly crawled back into the match. Saha (29 of 22) was the first wicket to fall for Gujarat in the eighth over of the innings. This wicket started a series of wickets that they kept losing at regular intervals. The Gujarat batters were failing to form any formidable partnership and were slowly losing the plot. By 12.5 overs, Hardik Pandya’s side was 95 for four down. But what Gujarat has displayed in the tournament while chasing and with Rahul Tewatia and David Miller still out there, the match was far from over.
With 13 runs being scored in the 15th over, Gujarat started to regain momentum. As the over ended they were stationed at 113 for four with 58 runs needed off 30 balls. This was followed by a 15 runs 16th over and the Tewatia-Miller duo was definitely changing the complexion of the match. The way Gujarat kept the chase under control was brilliant. They picked 17 runs off the 18th over from Josh Hazlewood and the match was nearly in their pockets. With seven runs left to be scored in the final over, the result of the match was not under much doubt. They completed the chase with three balls remaining and won the match by six wickets. This was the eighth victory for Gujarat from nine matches and they have become the first team to qualify for the play offs. Rahul Tewatia (43 off 25) and David Miller (39 of 24) remained unbeaten till the end. Bangalore faced the fifth defeat of the tournament form 10 matches.
This is how Twitter reacted.
170 is a score that gives you options but it isn't a score #RCB will be overjoyed with.
